The European Union is enacting the most comprehensive guardrails on the fast-developing world of artificial intelligence after the bloc’s parliament passed the AI Act on Wednesday. The landmark set of rules, in the absence of any legislation from the US, could set the tone for how AI is governed in the Western world. But the legislation’s passage comes as companies worry the law goes too far and digital watchdogs say it doesn’t go far enough.

World’s Most Extensive AI Rules Approved in EU Despite Criticism

No App Store needed: Apple caves, will allow sideloading in EU
Apple's compliance measures with the EU's Digital Markets Act haven't exactly been universally well received, so the iMaker is making a few tweaks to appease the software-developing masses. Allowing developers to distribute apps directly from their websites. Dubbed "Web Distribution," Apple said the feature will be available following a software update later in the spring. The new function will provide APIs "that facilitate the distribution of developers' apps from the web, integrate with system functionality, back up and restore users' apps, and more," Apple explained on a new developer support page.

Forskningssatsning ska bidra till utvecklingen av 6G
I budgetpropositionen för 2024 aviserade regeringen en ny forskningssatsning för utveckling av nästa generations trådlösa system. Nu får Vetenskapsrådet och Vinnova i uppdrag att genomföra satsningen som ska stärka grundforskning, tillämpad forskning och innovation inom sjätte generationens trådlösa system (6G). Utvecklingen av 6G har påbörjats. Forskningen är fortfarande i sin linda men den sjätte generationens nätverk förväntas innebära förbättrad hastighet, förbättrad databearbetning, sömlös anslutning och avsevärt minskad fördröjning.

The burgeoning electricity demands of AI means that a doubling of data centers to help keep pace with the industry will cause an 80% increase in planet-heating emissions, even if there are measures to improve the energy efficiency of these centers, the new report states. In the US, there is already evidence that the life of coal-fired power plants is being prolonged to meet the rising energy demands of AI. In just three years from now, AI servers could be consuming as much energy as Sweden does, separate research has found.

Därtill uppger nio av tio att deras renodlade molnmiljöer genererar en dataexplosion som är bortom mänsklig förmåga att hantera. 92 procent av svenska chefer svarar även att renodlade molnmiljöer genererar en explosion av data som är omöjlig att hantera med mänsklig förmåga. Globalt anser 86 procent detta. Den enorma mängden data som produceras gör det allt svårare att övervaka och säkra sina applikationer, därför krävs avancerad AI, analys och automation, säger Bernd Greifeneder, CTO på Dynatrace.
