Elon Musk Is Right About the End of the Smartphone—But for the Wrong Reason
Elon Musk recently predicted the end of the smartphone. “In five or six years,” he said, “we won’t have phones in the traditional sense. What we call a phone will really be an AI edge node — no apps, no OS, just AI.” It’s easy to dismiss such statements as provocation, but...

Chip powerhouse Taiwan calls for economic partnership deal with EU
Taiwan President Lai Ching-te called on Monday for the signing of an economic partnership agreement with the EU, saying it would boost cooperation in semiconductors and that as democracies the two sides should be working together. Such an agreement would set a sound institutional basis for further cooperation in fields as semiconductors and AI.

The role of power in unlocking the European AI revolution
The rise of AI is driving data center demand and shifting power market dynamics. With European demand predicted to more than triple by 2030, significant investments are needed to realize this growth. Currently, the entire European power ecosystem faces significant challenges in accommodating this growing demand.

Google Must Open Android to Other App Stores and Billing Options, Judge Rules
In December, a federal jury in San Francisco found that Google had violated antitrust law by imposing high fees and stringent rules on Epic Games and other app developers in Google’s app store. On Monday, Judge James Donato of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California ordered Google to make a series of changes to address its anticompetitive conduct. For three years starting Nov. 1, the company must allow developers to bring their own app stores to the Android mobile operating system.

Europe Aims for Leadership Role in Quantum Computing
The topic of quantum computing occupied an entire day at the recent PUZZLE X conference in Barcelona–with visionaries such as Nobel laureate Sir Roger Penrose, Bob Coecke (Quantinuum), Brian Subirana (Harvard and MIT), and Marta Estarellas (Qilimanjaro) served up as speakers. Soon, Qilimanjaro will install two quantum computers at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), with plans to participate in additional European tenders for installing quantum computers in high-performance computing (HPC) centers. Once the installation at the BSC headquarters is completed, Spain will have the first purely European quantum computer for public use in southern Europe, integrated with the MareNostrum 5 supercomputer, the most powerful in Southern Europe and among the most advanced worldwide.

Is Software and Hardware Ready for TinyML Tsunami?
Engineers working on embedding AI in edge devices who are just now doing their first machine learning project have high hurdles to overcome, but recent developments in the industry may offer encouragement. TinyML is a type of machine learning (ML) that allows models to run on smaller, less-powerful devices on the edge. It’s deployed in applications ranging from continuously monitoring machines for predictive maintenance purposes to smart home appliances.

Google’s Gemini Is the Real Start of the Generative AI Boom
Google’s release of Gemini, claimed to be a fundamentally new kind of AI model and the company’s most powerful to date. In fact, although the 12 months since ChatGPT launched have been a banner year for AI, there is good reason to think that the current AI boom is only getting started. Google had already rushed out a direct response to ChatGPT in the form of Bard earlier this year, finally launching LLM chatbot technology that it had developed earlier than OpenAI but chosen to keep private. With Gemini it claims to have opened a new era that goes beyond LLMs primarily anchored to text—potentially setting the stage for a new round of AI products significantly different from those enabled by ChatGPT.

The EU has launched a €1.2 billion cloud project to crack US dominance
The EU has approved state aid of up to €1.2 billion for a cloud and edge computing project across Europe in a bid to compete more effectively with the US. The scheme, called IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS), has been backed by France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain, and is aimed at creating the first interoperable and openly accessible European data processing ecosystem. "The IPCEI will provide for highly ambitious research, necessary to enable the uptake of innovative data processing applications and services for European businesses, public administrations, and citizens." The plan is to develop open source software that will allow for real-time and low-latency services, EU lawmakers said, with individual projects covering the entire cloud edge continuum, from the basic software layer to sector-specific applications.
